NEGAUNEE -- Finn Fun Day will again take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26 at the Negaunee Township Hall, at 42 State Hwy M35.
It is sponsored by the Finlandia Foundation National Lake Superior Chapter. There is ample parking, and no admission fee The gathering is open to all.
This day of Finnish entertainment, Finnish foods and a Finnish "tori" or marketplace will begin with a welcome by Chapter president Ron Hill, followed by the singing of the American and the Finnish national anthems, led by Tanja Stanaway and Pauline Kiltinen. Words to both songs will be provided.
Performers include Tanja Stanaway singing, Aaren Joki doing Sami "yoiking," Howard Aalto and his six-sided harmonica, and Oscar Forsman who plays the accordion. Margaret Vainio and Don Bode, ASAHI instructors, will lead the group in a brief demo of the gentle ASAHI exercises.
Coffee with "pulla" or the Finnish cardamom coffee bread, will be available all day long. Since there is no food truck this year, people may want to bring a little lunch for sustenance.
The six vendors this year include Tanja Stanaway and her Heart to Finland traveling store, Aaren Joki and his Metsami wood Creations, Tammy Ruppell with her Finnish cardamom and rye breads, Adeline Yost and her Baltic Inspirations of Estonian knits, Colleen Creach who makes Finnish carpets, and Jean Kohtala and her Gnome Decorations.
There will be many chances to visit with friends over coffee and refreshments. A white elephant table, a silent auction, and 50/50 drawings will add interest and a chance to win some money to the day.
Paarticipants also will receive an update on how things are going in the closing of Finlandia University.
