MARQUETTE – The final phase of the fountain restoration project in Harlow Park in Marquette will be completed Tuesday when a half-ton rock will be positioned in the center of the fountain and the fountain turned on. The project is coordinated by the American Legion post 44 of Marquette which “adopted” the park in the mid-1980s, said James Smith of the Marquette, co-chair of the Legion park committee. Using a $2,500 grant from the Shiras Institute and much volunteer labor, the Legion’s park committee has replaced the water piping and concrete liner of the fountain, which was built in the 1930s but was turned off for decades. The rock has been drilled to fit around the pipe that produces the water plume, said Smith. A winch will lower the rock into place starting at about 1 p.m. Tuesday.

ISHPEMING – Ishpeming’s sewage disposal plant is being constructed on schedule, according to the Lerner-Linden Construction Co., which is working on the building north of Ishpeming. The construction company superintendent, R. Hallett, said in a progress report today that the firm has 15 men working on the project at this time and that the only problem to date has been the water in the area. The particular type of soil, clay and sand has been making it difficult to jump ahead of schedule, Hallet said. The company is using a Griffin well point system with one eight-inch pump in operation and another pump for standby purposes. The company said one pump is electric and the other gas driven, in case of a power outage on the project. Hundreds of yards of black muck have been removed from the site and sand has been dumped in place of it. No concrete work has been started, but within a couple of weeks this may be done also.
