MARQUETTE — A second fund at Northern Michigan University has been established in the name of the late Robert Barrington, internationally known for his work in the field of corrections. The California Correctional Peace Officers group established a $10,000 fund at NMU at a recent observance of National Correctional Peace Officers Memorial week in Washington. The money will be used to increase educational and training opportunities for corrections officers. Barrington was a criminal justice professor at NMU. Last fall the organization donated $10,000 to NMU establishing the Correctional Student Award in Barrington’s name. It provides $1,000 each semester at NMU to the outstanding justice studies student in the corrections field. The first recipient was Timothy J. Moore of Marquette.

MARQUETTE — Marquette’s chamber of commerce, in cooperation with the city’s department of public works, in an effort to get tourists to stay longer in the Marquette area, rather than just drive through, have erected tourist attraction and tourist direction signs in the city. The first of these signs to be erected is located at the corner of Baraga Ave. and S. Front St., on the Carroll Motors building, directing tourists to the swimming area, ore docks and picnic area at Presque Isle Park. Ten signs have been erected this week just south of the Marquette State Prison on U.S. 41, in the fashion “consecutive signs” manner. The first one welcomes tourists to Marquette and the following nine point out tourist attractions, such as Sunken Gardens, Mount Marquette, the John Burt pioneer home, the ore docks, the historical museum, Presque Isle Park, Northern Michigan University, Sugar Loaf Mountain and the nature trails at Presque Isle Park, which will be opening within the next two weeks.
