MARQUETTE – Carpeting at the Marquette County Youth Home should be replaced at a cost of $5,362, the Marquette County Board’s Committee of the Whole recommended last week. Through a unanimous vote, the committee recommended awarding a bid to Sherwin Williams of Marquette for removal of old and installation of new carpeting at the home on County Road 553 in Marquette. The juvenile detention center’s living, recreation, conference and dining rooms, boys’ and girls’ hallways, 12 bedrooms, and entry will be carpeted with 508 yards of Starmaker nylon carpet. County Administrator Dennis Aloia said Sherwin Williams was the lowest of three bidders for the project. Aloia said the cost of recarpeting is covered under the County Youth Home’s 1993.

There is continuing progress in the Upper Peninsula by many communities in solving problems of water supply and sewage disposal, reports Russell L. Johnson and Cletus Courchene of the Upper Peninsula office of the Michigan Department of Health in Escanaba. Newberry has been promised $84,000 under the federal Acceleration Public Works program to help lay storm sewers; and at Ishpeming sewers and a sewage treatment plant are under construction. Stephenson’s sewage treatment plant in Forsyth is receiving alterations and additions. The original plant was built in 1939. The Forsyth Township Board has signed an agreement with State Health Commissioner Albert E. Heustis to complete sewage treatment facilities by April 1, 1966. The action renews the township’s eligibility for permit to construct sewers in the Gwinn area. Consulting engineers have been retained to study the water system in Ewen; the unincorporated village of Chatham has received a report from engineers on a proposed water system for that community; and at Ontonagon the city has received a report covering the design of a water intake from Lake Superior and a filtration plant.
