MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University has received a state grant for specialized police training in the Upper Peninsula. The U.P. Law Enforcement Development Center will use the $82,530 grant from the Michigan Office of Criminal Justice to provide training formerly available only downstate. Programs include basic radar operation, firearms and legal updates, specialized accident investigation, evidence processing, precision driving and high-risk felony traffic stops.

MARQUETTE – A discussion program concerning the special election Monday to extend the two extra mills tax for general county purposes will be aired tomorrow over WDMJ, The Mining Journal radio station. The program, “Community Speaks,” is broadcast Saturday mornings at 9:30. Residents of the area are invited to phone questions to the station relative to the subject under discussion. Steelways Magazine estimates that the new interstate highway system will use 13.2 million tons of structural steel, much of it in bridge construction, and 13.6 million tons of reinforcing steel, used to improve the strength of concrete.
