Special to the Journal
We got two cats from my grandpa in 2019. Both were girls, one was mostly brown and the other was mostly gray and white but she had an orange spot on her forehead. I named that one Rose. Ellsworth (my younger brother) wanted to name the other one Pete, but Mom said no, so I helped him find a good name and we named her after the girl in “Cat in The Hat,” Sally.
Rose was shy at first but she was not shy for long. Rose was very cute and fluffy and she had an adventurous personality. She loved to paw at crumpled-up tinfoil and feathers hanging from sticks. I was her favorite person and she used to rub against my legs whenever she got the chance and she would purr when she saw me. When we went on walks she would follow us like a dog. We all used to think that the cats were like dogs trapped inside cats’ skins. Then Rose started going out on adventures short then long.
Once she left for a whole summer. I was sad and I missed her. When she came back she drank two bowls of water and ate one bowl of food. Then, she left again. In the meantime, Sally had five kittens: Arrow, Eleanor, Simon, Crookshanks, and Garfield III. I got to keep one. I picked Arrow. I named Arrow and my mom named Simon, Ellsworth named Crookshanks and my brother Scott named Garfield, and my friend named Eleanor.
Arrow is brown, and gray, and has spots of orange. She likes to play with plastic Easter eggs that have small chicken-flavored treats in them. At first, she didn’t want to come near me, but over time she became more friendly. Now she always comes to me. I hold her in the barn sometimes (they live in the barn).
While I was on vacation out of town, at the Wisconsin Dells, my mom was looking on her phone and she said, “Is that Rose?!” She showed me the picture and it was Rose at UPAWS in a kennel! My grandma was taking care of our house while we were gone, so my mom called my grandma and asked her to pick up Rose and take her home. My grandma said yes, she would do that, but when we got home, Rose was gone already. I still love and miss Rose, but I have Arrow now. I plan to train her and teach her to do tricks.
