ISHPEMING — The United States’ largest Jubilee Foods recently opened on U.S. 41 in Ishpeming with a ribbon cutting ceremony led by Jay and Christy Blewett. Owned and operated by the Blewett family of Ishpeming, Jubilee Foods was founded to provide customers with a wide variety of top quality products at competitive prices. The store, which is managed by Robert Delongchamp, will include a product sampling program and event marketing to create an interesting shopping experience. The store will be open from 6 a.m. to midnight every day. “Customers in this area demand a large variety of items, fresh perishables, and competitive prices, and we intend to accommodate their wishes,” Jim Blewett said. “We are reflecting all manufacturer’s allowances, running weekly ad specials, and continually monitoring all shelf prices to be a leader in these areas.”
Construction of the store began almost a year ago. A traffic light will soon be installed on U.S. 41 near the store to allow smoother traffic flow.

GWINN — With all teams ready to make up postponed games, the Gwinn softball league had a busy week. Nine games were played with Peterson’s Restaurant being able to keep its slate clean by edging second place Bauman’s Eggs, 4 to 3. Fralick’s Loggers, a late entry in the league play, broke even on 4 games – defeating Little Lake 3 to 3, and Steens by the same score, but losing the Gwinn Inn, 4-2 and Steen’s 6-4, to take third place. Happy Hour defeated VFW, 9-3, and held onto fourth rung; Steen’s by blanking Happy Hour 9-0, and losing to the Loggers, stay even at 4 and 4. Little Lake and Gwinn Inn are tied at 3-5 and VFW holds down the cellar with a 1-6 record. One of the best games of the week was the 3 to 1 win by Bauman’s Eggs over Little Lake; neither team had scored until the 6th when the Lakers scored, only to have the Eggs push three runs across in their half. Jim Leudtke, the winning pitcher, gave up three hits. Regular scheduled games will be played Monday and Tuesday at the Little Lake and Gwinn diamonds.
