CHAMPION — The NICE Community Schools will be able to solve Champion School’s radon problem easily, experts have told the district’s board of education. “We have the best news possible…” Superintendent Bill Hyry said. The school has radon levels up to 30 times above normal. Lifelong exposure to high levels of the naturally occurring gas has proven to cause lung cancer. A study of the school found gravel beneath the building sub-floors, Hyry said. To solve the radon problem, experts will drill through the sub-floors and install four to six inch pipes, which will run from beneath the building and out through the roof. A fan will pull radon from beneath the floor and exhaust it into the outside air. The Marquette County Health Department has received a $10,000 grant to mitigate the problem.
