MARQUETTE — Mary Tiziani McKinney recently was named Teacher of the Year by the Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education. The board and administration recognized McKinney, along with other finalists, Steve Sarasin, Sandy Knoll fourth grade teacher; and Sharon Green, Graveraet Middle School choral/integrated arts teacher. A science and language arts teacher at the Bothwell Middle School, McKinney began working for the district in 1985. She graduated Cum Laude from Northern Michigan University in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree majoring in math and science and has since completed 27 graduate hours. McKinney is a member of the Michigan Science Teachers Association and Phi Delta Kappa. She has been active in providing in-service training to middle school science teachers and has trained elementary teachers in the MAPS school district in Project AIMS, as well as presenting at various science conferences. McKinney will be honored at the Michigan Teacher of the Year dinner in Lansing this fall.

MARQUETTE — Eight members of the second 1963 class in the “fundamentals of skin and scuba diving” will graduate tomorrow following their open water dives into Lake Superior in the morning. Receiving their NAUI certificates tomorrow will be Stephen Dupras, Barton Bartelli, George Brassard and John Harkin of Marquette; Stewart Abbott and Bruce Jokinen, Negaunee; Thomas Vicary, Ishpeming; and Robert Harding, K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base. The course consisted of 13 hours of classroom lectures, 15 hours of pool work, a three-hour final exam and a three-hour open water dive into Lake Superior. The class is offered through the public services division of Northern Michigan University and is taught by Scott Holman, Ishpeming, an instructor certified by the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI). All equipment, instructors and compressed air for the class are provided by the Lake Superior Skin Diving Co.
