MARQUETTE — Before the Upper Peninsula Baseball Classic round-robin tournament began, Ishpeming Legion baseball coach Larry Joseph predicted that his team would still be around for its conclusion. Joseph was justified, as Ishpeming knocked off the Marquette Blues 6-3 Sunday in the championship game to cap an undefeated four-game run for the tourney title. Marquette manager Scott Gipp said his squad was beaten by a team that executed better. David Joseph pitched three innings, relieved by Mark Dellangelo in the fourth inning. Outfielder Chad Asgaard went 2 for 2 with one run. After a double play stranded Marquette leadoff hitter Geoff Grawn at third base in the first inning, Dellangelo lined a one-out single for Ishpeming, stole second, and scored on Troy Wiitanen’s sacrifice fly. Asgaard then ripped a double to the left field fence off pitcher Brian Balding. He was plated on designated hitter Greg Kauppila’s single. Shortstop Mike Lusardi singled to score Ryan Telford in the fifth and Ishpeming broke the game open with three sixth-inning runs. Marquette scored two runs by Charlie Burridge and Eric Provost with a base hit in the seventh to account for the final score giving the victory and the tournament to Ishpeming.
