BIG BAY — The lawn mowers are buzzing, paintbrushes are touching things up, equipment is being checked over, files and records and a million other things are being checked. This will be the 60th consecutive summer that Bay Cliff Health Camp will host a seven-week camp for handicapped children. The kids come from throughout the Upper Peninsula. The counselors, therapists and staff come from everywhere in the United States. Bay Cliff Health Camp was founded in 1934 by Dr. Goldie Corneliuson and Nurse Elba Morse for undernourished and underprivileged children. The focus evolved to therapy for a multitude of handicaps. The camp is now governed by a board and operated from funds donated by the general public, clubs, organizations, and businesses. Tim Bennett has been camp director since 1988. The children who attend are examined and evaluated; their individual potential is established and goals are set. The program, designed to have long lasting benefits for the children, tends to have an effect on the staff too. That may be why everyone seems so friendly and ready to help.

ISHPEMING — Edmund J. Nault, exalted ruler of the Ishpeming Elks Lodge, today appealed for display of the Stars and Stripes throughout the community on Flag Day, June 14. Elks were observing Flag Day long before Congress formally declared it, Nault said, adding, “Now is the time for Americans everywhere to develop a deeper pride in our flag, to better understand its glorious history and the noble principles for which it stands.” The Elks leader announced that the Flag Day program will consist of a parade at 7 p.m. through downtown Ishpeming, followed by a public observance at the Miners First National Bank parking lot. Arrangements for the program are being prepared by the lodge’s parade chairman, Frank J. Tasson. Participating in the parade will be the Ishpeming National Guard, Ishpeming City Bank, Blue Notes, units from the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Boy and Girl Scouts, and the Sea Scouts. In case of inclement weather, the services will be held at the Elks Hall.

Starting at $4.00/week.
