Superiorland Yesterdays

ISHPEMING — Westwood High School’s Natural Resources/Future Foresters of America Club attended the state forestry skills competition at Michigan State University. Four teams of students from Negaunee and Westwood placed first, third, fourth, and fifth in the state in a field of 28. Justin Oster, Brad Pepin, Eric Hill, Joe Perry, Steve Waara, Jesse Kaikkonen, Chris Moffatt, Brad Perry, Sam Richards, Mike Sivula, Justin Baxter, and Missy Piirainen competed in land measurements, woodland management, timber cruising and related forestry activities. Five students will represent the state of Michigan in the national competition in November at Kansas City, Kan. Their instructor is Tim Eldridge.

MARQUETTE — City recreation Director James C. Engle today announced the roster of personnel who will set as supervisors at parks and recreation areas operated by the city this summer. Julius Tiziani, teacher at Graveraet Junior High School, will assist him as general supervisor in charge of all playgrounds and swimming areas. Named to work at the pools are: Shiras Pool – Patrick Worth, Joy Holman, Joanne Schultz, Jan Jacobson; Tourist Park – John Kircher; Quarry Pool – Alvin Fritz; Picnic Rocks – Neal Anderson; Rotating swim supervisor – Al Sandona. Playground Directors will be: Harlow Park – Alethea (Scotty) Rossi; Hurley Field – Dennis DeMerse; Lakeside Park – Richard Bucklin; Williams Park – Roger LaBonte; Baraga Park – John Wood; Memorial Field – Juliet Nowak. A full schedule of hours and special events for the summer season will be announced within the next few weeks.
