Director Lucas Wickstrom has announced the program for the Negaunee City Band's first concert of the summer season at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Outdoor Performing Arts Center at the east end of Iron Street. Some seating is available, but attendees may wish to bring their own chairs. The opening number is Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra," with fanfares that will be familiar to those who have seen the film, "2001: A Space Odyssey." This is followed by Paul Yoder's "Alpha and Omega," which segues the openings of famous works followed by closings of different works. The program continues with a joyous, vibrant overture, "Antares." The audience will be treated to several marches, each with its own style. "March and Procession of Bacchus," from a ballet, is traditional and regal, while "Capital City Concert March" is a march in the British style. Another concert march is "Crown Imperial," first performed at the coronation of King George VI of Britain in 1937. Two of the numbers are evocative of ghosts and spirits, beginning with "Danse Macabre," a haunting Halloween anthem. The other is "Night on Bald Mountain," a tone poem celebrating revels that take place on St. John's night in June. "Bluebell" is an enjoyable heart-warming composition, while George M. Cohan's "Give My Regards to Broadway," written in 1904 for a Broadway musical, needs no introduction. The program will conclude with the traditional "Just a Closer Walk with Thee," with its popular Dixieland-style arrangement. In the photo above, the band marches in Negaunee's Memorial Day parade.
