MARQUETTE — After more than a month of controversy over fire protection, a committee has formed to study whether there’s a need for a new fire hall in the north or west part of the city. The group, “Citizens for Fire Safety,” hopes to determine the fire safety needs of Marquette citizens, Co-Chairman Dan Cook said. The City Commission voted May 11th to cut the 80-year-old Fire Station No. 2 from the budget after deciding it didn’t add much fire protection. It’s only 11 blocks away from the other fire station on South Third Street. “We are concerned that the City Commission acted against the desires and best interests of Marquette residents on its recent budget vote,” Cook said. The committee is now working on plans for fund-raising, recruitment, and future activities.

ISHPEMING — Teachers finished their school year here today with one month’s salaries in arrears and little prospect of receiving their May paychecks for two weeks or more. Several instructors, who planned to leave for their homes over the weekend, were forced to postpone their trips and wire for money to solve the transportation problem. School officials last night said they hoped to have money available to meet the last month’s requirements by the middle of June. The last salary payments were met through liberation of school funds tied up in the Peninsula State bank. It is understood that state officials have refused to permit further withdrawals from the Peninsula bank until its reorganization plans have been completed.
