ISHPEMING — The bruises on the arms, legs, and wrists of Bob and Dave Marietti represent hard-earned money – $5,000 donated to the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame and Museum. The Ishpeming brothers recently completed a 3,000-mile, 48-day trip from Sacramento, Calif. to Atlanta on a bicycle built for two. Pledges from the eight-state excursion will benefit the Ishpeming ski hall. “I pumped, he steered,” said Dave, a 40-year-old Special Olympian with Downs Syndrome. The Mariettis hope a journal they kept about the trip will be published to raise money for Special Olympics.

GWINN — The third of Gwinn’s modern elementary schools will be dedicated in ceremonies at K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base Thursday evening. Dr. Edward Pfau, dean of education at Northern Michigan University, will be the featured speaker at the dedication of the program. The building will open for public inspection at 7 pm. The new school is one of two schools at the Air Force Base. It was first used by classes March 25th, when Principal Thomas Moss moved the afternoon session of the McDonald School into the new building. For many children the date marked the first full day of classes they had ever experienced because of previous split shift scheduling. Moss urges all persons interested in public education to attend the dedication.

Starting at $3.23/week.
