MUNISING — Recycling in Alger County got a boost from the County Board Monday, which voted for the second year to help fund the recycling committee’s efforts. The board voted to give the committee $300 toward promoting voluntary recycling efforts. The all-volunteer committee works through the Michigan State University Extension office in Munising to encourage residents to recycle. Committee members hold monthly recyclable pickups at the Munising Fire Hall and Limestone road commission garage, and hold magazine and scrap metal drives twice a year.

MARQUETTE — This past winter was marked by a number of record breaking low temperatures and consecutive cold waves, and the past month also provided new records, but in a different way. One maximum temperature mark was set and, despite the fact that this month’s precipitation was below normal, two record rainfall marks were set during April. On the 3rd it was 72 degrees, the highest temperature ever recorded on that date in Marquette. The previous mark was 68, in 1929. Rainfall records were broken on the 2nd, when .82 of an inch of rain came down, with the old mark having been .63 of an inch in 1903. It was below freezing on 17 days during the month, and the average temperature was below the freezing mark on three days.
