NEGAUNEE — Three children escaped injury late Friday night when fire swept through their upper-level apartment on Pioneer Avenue in Negaunee. The children, ages 9, 10 and 12, were home alone when the fire broke out at about 9:45 pm, said Negaunee Police Chief Paul Waters. “I turned on the siren and (the children) came down a couple seconds later,” said Negaunee police office D.A. Salbert. About 300 people watched as 30 firefighters attempted to control the blaze, which by 11 p.m. had engulfed the roof and attic area of the 100-year-old building.
