ISHPEMING — Ishpeming Township has reclaimed the distinction of having the best-tasting water in the Upper Peninsula. The award was handed out Tuesday in Escanaba at the U.P. meeting of the American Water Works Association. Ishpeming Township won the award two years ago and defeated six other communities this year, said Craig Marietti, waterworks foreman.
The 90-foot-deep well No. 5 off of North Lake Drive is responsible for both victories.
“It’s clear, there’s no odor to it, no taste and no chlorine or anything added. It’s real good water,” Marietti said.

MARQUETTE — Conservation officers in Marquette are puzzled over the inconsistency of juries, finding that several weeks after one man was acquitted in municipal court on a fish law violation charge another man, arrested under identical circumstances, was found guilty.
On April 15, a man was tried before a jury of six men on a charge of possessing a spear in the vicinity of Cherry Creek, a trout stream.
Although admitting possession of the spear, declared that he did not intend to use it for fishing purposes, although officers contend that his possession of the instrument near the stream presupposed its use and therefore constituted a violation of the state law.
A jury found the man not guilty. Two days after this trial another man was arrested at Cherry Creek under circumstances virtually the same as the previous case, and was found guilty of possessing a spear near a trout stream. He was ordered to pay a $5 fine.
