MARQUETTE — Although the old stairway at Sugarloaf Mountain was extensively damaged by fire last year, some of the lumber is being salvaged by a local trails group.
The North Country Trail Hikers Club will remove salvageable lumber from the Sugarloaf trail Saturday. The lumber was donated to the group by Marquette County, which owns the Sugarloaf tract.
The lumber will be used on trail projects. The local group is developing the section of the North Country Trail that runs through the central Upper Peninsula. The 3,200-mile trail runs from the Adirondack Mountains in New York to North Dakota.

MARQUETTE — Thirteen Marquette County farmers yesterday received federal crop production loans totaling $585, according to L.R. Walker, county agricultural agent. Six more applications for loans have been approved at Minneapolis and checks covering the amounts applied for are expected to arrive here in a day or two.
The seed loan checks received yesterday ranged from $25 to $200, with the average loan amounting to $45.
Up to yesterday, Mr. Walker had received 65 applications for loans from farmers in this county, and he called attention to the fact that April 25 is the last date upon which application may be made.
Information received from Russel E. Horwood, dairy specialist, of Marquette, who is serving as a member of the board of examiners in the federal office at Minneapolis, shows that up to Wednesday of this week 280 loans had been granted to Upper Peninsula farmers, including 265 seed loans and 15 feed loans.
