National Weather Service: Spring melt could lead to floods

By Journal Staff

MARQUETTE — The National Weather Service’s Marquette office issued a hydrologic outlook on Friday, advising of possible flooding next week.

The outlook states: “Much warmer temperatures will lead to a melting snowpack and possible flooding next week. Unseasonably warm temperatures are expected through next week resulting in substantial melting of Upper Michigan’s above -normal snowpack. Snow water equivalent values are more than double normal values for this late in the season across portions of western and central Upper Michigan.”

The outlook continues with: “Snowmelt accelerates on Sunday through late next week when low temperatures are not forecast to fall below freezing, but precipitation chances remain low. Minor flooding of low-lying and flood-prone locations is expected along streams and rivers that reguarly experience flooding during the spring melt.”

The outlook concludes with “If you live in an area that has previously experienced spring melt flooding, now is a good time to prepare for potential impacts.”

Starting at $3.23/week.
