MARQUETTE -- The Kiwanis Club of Marquette has announced this year's award for the top firefighter in the city.
Marquette firefighter Brandon Cory was recognized on Thursday as the 2023 Kiwanis Firefighter of the Year.
According to Cory's nomination letter, he has been exemplary in his duties as a Marquette city firefighter since his hire, going above and beyond the normal expectations of a firefighter in his time with the department.
"Brandon made an immediate impact and has been a vital asset in the department's training program," Marquette Fire Chief Ian Davis said, reading the nomination letter Thursday morning. "He has displayed not only proficient and professional medical skills throughout his time at the department, but has also proven to be a very seasoned firefighter in all aspects of his duties."
Cory is heavily involved with training Marquette firefighters in both areas and is an EMS instructor-coordinator and part of the EMS training committee, rapid intervention crew instructor, and head of truck maintenance. He also assists in multiple training programs.
According to the nomination letter, Cory is the chair of the truck committee, and his knowledge and relationships built has been vital in the purchase of new apparatus.
"Firefighter Cory is a joy to work with and he gets along excellently with his coworkers," Davis said. "Brandon is respectful to his officers and peers and maintains a positive attitude day in and day out."
Cory said that it feels good to be nominated for the award.
"We don't truly do it for this, but it is good to get recognition every once in awhile just so people do know all the hard work all of us put in day in and day out," Cory said.
