MARQUETTE — Vern C. Dahlquist, executive director of the United Way of Marquette County, will retire April 30. Dahlquist has been executive director since 1989. He joined the local United Way chapter following 28 years with Child and Family Services of Michigan Inc., including four years as state director. He said he’s enjoyed working with the United Way Board of Directors and the hundreds of volunteers. “The citizens of Marquette County, who year after year contribute to our campaign and ensure funding for our needed agencies, are the backbone of the system.” Dahlquist said. Active in community affairs, Dahlquist is a member of the Marquette County Commission on Aging, the Military Affairs Committee of the Marquette Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Noon Kiwanis. The United Way board expects to name a new executive director before Dahlquist leaves.

ISHPEMING — Today was moving day for the Michigan Bell Telephone Co.’s business office in Ishpeming. The office has been at the present location on Division St. since 1954. Business office records from Ishpeming were moved to the Marquette office, necessitating a new office for paying telephone bills. The Miners’ National Agency, 106 E. Canda St., Ishpeming, will be the new place to pay phone bills, effective Monday, April 1. The Pioneer Agency of Negaunee and Trewhella’s Department Store in Palmer will continue to take telephone payments. Customers who prefer to mail payments can still do so. Speaking on the location change, R.C. Polzin, manager of Michigan Bell for Ishpeming and Negaunee, said today that “We’re doing this to provide more efficient service to customers in the area.” The space in the Bell building in Ishpeming will be used for additional equipment that will be added in the future, he added.
