March 25, 1933 – ISHPEMING – Alfred Johnson, who is promoting the Salvation Army’s sports benefit event to be held Tuesday evening at 7:15 in the high school gymnasium, has lined up enough old-time basketball players to form several teams. He will be able to make a substitution every minute of the game, if necessary, he says. Major Sam Tripp, of Negaunee, has advised Mr. Johnson to have his players in the best of condition as the Negaunee team has a formidable lineup. Sheriff Andrew Lahti and Uno Vanni, Negaunee’s “man mountain” guards, claim they can stop the fastest forwards in the game and Johnson is worried. The two managers were busy yesterday trying to iron out the eligibility of Harry Finkbeiner, manager of the Consolidated Fuel & Lumber Company’s local office, who lives in Negaunee, but who has been signed by Johnson over Tripp’s protest. It is likely that “Fink,” who was once a Munising star, will have to play a little for both teams. Tripp announced yesterday that he has 30 players and has applications from Gwinn old-timers who want to play on the Negaunee team. Besides the basketball game there will be a varied program of interesting sports. The Republic Red Devils and Ishpeming United Cigars will play a “grudge” game to decide the independent championship of the county.
