ISHPEMING — The Carnegie Public Library in Ishpeming plans to buy $4,000 worth of compact discs and CD players that can be checked out by the public. The funds will come from the $18,000 Lily Schopp Trust Fund left to the library by Ishpeming native Lily Schopp, who died in Hawaii in 1991. Expenditures are reviewed by the city’s Library Board then forwarded to the city council, which approved the CD purchase Wednesday. The library plans to stock a wide variety of music on CD, including classical, popular, and country and western.

ISHPEMING — Old Man Winter, supposed to be in his dying moments, unleashed another blow at the Ishpeming area last night and today, unloading more than 10 inches of snow here. City and county road crews went into action in efforts to keep streets and highways open for traffic. The snowfall brought the year’s total to just over 100 inches, compared to 111.5 at this time last year. High winds and slippery roads made driving hazardous since the onslaught began yesterday. Weather conditions forced closing of schools in the western half of the county. Visibility was impaired by the blowing snow. Schools in Champion, Michigamme, Republic, and Diorite closed today, but many school buses made their regular runs to Ishpeming schools. In Ishpeming, heavy equipment roared through the night keeping streets open to traffic as the storm showed no signs of letup. Some streets were partially blocked this morning, but the main thoroughfares were open and in fairly good shape. Public works department crews went into action early yesterday afternoon after it became apparent the weather would get worse. Only one accident occurred in the city and only nine overnight parking violations were reported
