MARQUETTE — Tanya Spalding of Marquette, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Al Spalding, received a free day from school at Bethesda Baptist School. Spalding was given a free day because of her classroom excellence. Students at the school can earn a free day by getting seven bonus points. To receive a bonus point a student must score a 10 on daily assignments for five days in a row in a subject. Even one nine causes the streak to be broken and must be started again. For the bonus points to hold, students must also do well on exams, school administrator Bob Bolton said.

MARQUETTE — Northern State Teachers college debating teams scored double victory yesterday over Michigan Tech, Northern’s affirmative squad winning from Tech’s negative group here yesterday morning, and the Northern negative team winning from Tech’s affirmative at Houghton last night. Dr. C.H. Moore, of Ripon College, was judge of the debate here and the judge at Houghton was Dr. Lincoln D. Holmes, of Lawrence College, Appleton, Wis. “Resolved, that property taxes in Michigan for state and local revenue should be substantially replaced by other forms of taxation” was the subject of the dual debate. The Northern affirmative team which won here yesterday morning was composed of Henry Helmonen, Stanley Roberts, and William Thomas. The losing Tech team here was composed of Carl Passenheim, John Rosza, and Carl Zapfee. The Northern men who won last night in Houghton were Robert Anderson, Arthur Carlson, Lawrence Hebbard, and William Koski, alternate. They debated against John Durland, James Hughes, Louis Leibowitz, and Ralph Hayden, alternate, who represented Tech. It was the first time in five years of debate competition between Northern and Michigan Tech that either school has won a double victory.
