HOUGHTON — A Michigan Technological University statistician will spend the next three years helping state officials estimate the size of the Upper Peninsula’s moose herd. Thomas Drummer, whose specialty is estimating animal populations, will help develop census techniques that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources can use in counting moose. Sixty moose were released into the central Upper Peninsula between 1985 and 1987. The DNR wants information such as the size of the current population, the number of males and females, and their distribution across the region. DNR scientists believe nearly all the moose are within a 50-mile by 30-mile area. The plan calls for flying over the area along parallel lines one mile apart.

MARQUETTE — Chocolay Lions will conduct a two-day sale of light bulbs on a door-to-door basis beginning one week from today. Spokesmen for the township organization said funds realized from the sale on March 18-19 are earmarked to help defray expenses of various youth activities sponsored by the club in Chocolay. Proceeds will be used, in large part, to purchase camping equipment for two Chocolay Scout troops: Boy Scout Troop 361 and Girl Scout Troop 108. The Chocolay Lions Club, since its formation several years ago, has devoted the major share of its efforts toward betterment of the township, particularly in the field of recreational facilities for Chocolay young people.
