MARQUETTE — Marquette Township manager Tom Warstler resigned Tuesday, saying he’d gotten an offer he couldn’t refuse. “I wasn’t really looking for a change but this was an unsolicited opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” Warstler said. “I labored over the decision for a month.” Warstler declined to identify his new employer, but said the private sector Escanaba firm had made him a “substantially better” offer. Warstler makes $31,600 a year as township manager. Warstler said there were no problems leading up to his resignation. He started in the job June 1. His resignation becomes effective April 15. As of last night’s, meeting, it was unclear whether the board would conduct a special meeting or wait until the March 16 regular meeting to work on naming a replacement. Warstler said he would recommend George LaBlonde, now township treasurer, as a possible replacement. “He’s been kind of a mentor and worked on many township projects,” Warstler said.

UPPER PENINSULA — The Upper Peninsula Association of Secondary School Principals has gone on record urging that the act establishing a Saturday opening of the deer season be amended to include all counties in the Peninsula. Association members approved a resolution to that effect, stating that last year’s Saturday opening “greatly reduced student absenteeism in public high schools.” The law was enacted last year. However, it applies only to the western two-thirds of the Upper Peninsula. The original bill stipulated that the deer season in the entire Northern Peninsula open on the Saturday preceding Nov. 15 each year, but it was amended to exclude the eastern third of the U.P., where the season continues to open on Nov. 15. At its midwinter meeting recently, the Northern Michigan Sportsmen’s Association, one of the prime movers in the Saturday opening bill, voted in favor of having the season open on Saturday throughout the state.
