NEGAUNEE — Thanks to a new program that brings young and old together at the Negaunee Senior Center, teenagers such as Chelsea Herman are discovering that the unspoken fear of aging doesn’t have to be. “I couldn’t believe they were so old because they acted so young,” Herman said after talking to members of a senior citizen panel at the center. Herman and 17 other students participated in the Youth and Elders at Home (YEAH) program, which is designed to demonstrate to young people that there is indeed life after 60. Husband and wife, Bud and Mae Rogers, along with Betty Holman, caught the teenagers off guard with their wit and charm. YEAH is the brainchild of Jan Koehs, a middle school teacher in Negaunee who believes that students need a chance to get involved in community service. Holman, an active 73-year-old, referred to herself as the bionic woman, making light of the hearing aids and pacemakers that come with age. She encouraged the kids to treasure their youth. “But no matter how old you are, you have a wonderful life to look forward to.”
