MARQUETTE — Penny Larsen watched from the sidelines as the U.P. 200 mushers raced through Marquette in 1992 and she thought, “This is something I’d love to be involved in.” Little did she know her wish would result in her becoming the volunteer coordinator for the race’s 1993 edition. “And here I am, making about 500 phone calls and working out schedules for some 243 volunteers,” she said, “but I love it.” As coordinator, Larsen matched the interests and schedules of hundreds of people with the host of jobs it takes to make the race happen. Volunteers do everything from crowd control at the start of the race and staffing race headquarters at the Holiday Inn in Marquette to working along the trail as the mushers travel by “This community is just wonderful,” Larsen said. “You just call on them and they say, “Sure, we’d be glad to help.” Marquette resident Susan Parent, along with her friend JoAnn McClellan, will also volunteer a dozen hours during the race. “My advice to anyone thinking about volunteering is to go ahead and do it.”
