MARQUETTE — Area students have combined their efforts to create an illustrated collection of essays called “Semi-Prose.” The project began when Jack Granfield, a Marquette Senior High School English teacher, decided that an outstanding collection of Freshman essays from last year deserved publication. Granfield sought and received funding through the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs Mini-Grant program to publish the students’ work. Students in Sigma Tau Delta, Northern Michigan University’s English honorary society, collected 38 essays from over 200 submitted. Oh!Zone, a local group of students who publish their own environmental magazine, is developing the publication’s layout and students of Diane Mahoney at MSHS are working on illustrations. The group of student writers includes Emily Wros, Sara Bett, Kara Matheson, Emily Zielinski and Editor-in-chief Christian Hensen. Workshops and public receptions are planned.

ISHPEMING — The Mining Journal’s Modern Living Festival and Cooking School was held at the Ishpeming Armory with enthusiasm and enjoyment as a crowd estimated at near the 1,300 mark filled the armory to capacity yesterday and again today. An elaborate display of cooking facilities, including electric ranges, a refrigerator and a cooking table was centered on the stage with a mirror being used overhead. Susan Lowe demonstrated her ability to captivate the attention of everyone present. Her easy manner and charm left no doubt that she knew her subject matter and how to present an excellent program. Assisting Ms. Lowe were, in her words, “one of the finest group of young girls ever to help me at cooking school. It is obvious that these students from Ishpeming High School have received excellent training in home economics.” The seniors, who are majoring in home economics, are Jean Fassbender, Elaine Anderson, Gretchen Strand and Katherine Sarvello. Handling the master of ceremonies task, Eldon Wallace, program director for Mining journal Radio Station, WDMJ, conducted the announcing throughout the afternoon. Prizes given were large grocery orders, certificates, sports shirts, charcoal, mixing bowls, and many other gifts.
