ISHPEMING — Carl Pellonpaa of WLUC-TV 6, Ralph Bietila of the Ishpeming Ski Club, Steve Swanson of MFC First National Bank and Willie Peterson of The Mining Journal displayed buttons supporting the 106th Annual Suicide Bowl Ski Jumping Tournament on Feb. 6 and 7. Advance buttons sell for $7 at area businesses and are good for both days of jumping. The buttons are $10 on the day of competition. Bietila was a member of the 1948 and 1952 Olympic teams and the 1950 World Champion Team and has been inducted into both the National Ski Hall of Fame and the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame.

MARQUETTE — Twenty-two tellers, cashiers, bookkeepers, and secretaries from six banks in Marquette County and Munising began classes at the Hotel Northland. They included Richard Nebel, Munising, Elouise Grundberg, Marquette, Maxine Mattila, Republic, and Nancy Suardini, Ishpeming, members of an in-service training class for bank personnel sponsored by the Northern Michigan College Public Services Division. Director of the class is Harold S. Fisher, NMC business consultant. The purpose of the course is to increase the knowledge of banking services among employees and give them a better grasp of the role of the bank within the community. The program stresses courtesy and improved service to the customer.
