MANISTIQUE — Heavy snow last week created problems that prompted several parents to challenge the city council this week over snow removal ordinances. City Assessor Dave Huddleston, sitting in at the meeting for City Manager Alan Housler, said the existing city ordinance is not enforceable. Mayor John Stewart said, “We are not taking this thing lightly.” Because Deer Street, or M-94, is a state highway, Stewart asked street administrator Ole Sholander what would be required to clear the area. Sholander said all “state highway clearings must be authorized by the Newberry office (of the Michigan Department of Transportation), because funding is limited.”

MARQUETTE — The Marquette city commission has appropriated an additional $500 for a preliminary engineering survey of the proposed boating facilities at Presque Isle Park, but it won’t cost the city any more money. The paradox is due to the fact that a contribution of $500 has been made by an interested resident for this purpose. The city previously (at its special meeting Jan. 16) appropriated $500 for the engineering survey. Because of the fact that the Michigan Waterways Commission requires that the local governing body put up $1,000 for such a study, the contributor made his check out to the city treasurer, and the city’s $1,000 appropriation will actually only deplete the treasury by $500. The project engineer will proceed with the survey, the waterways commission said, “in hopes that an application can be filed with the U.S. Housing and Home Finance Agency for an accelerated act grant to facilitate the completion of the project.”
