MARQUETTE — Habitat for Humanity was given some city-owned land this week and the Marquette group plans to start building homes for low-income families this summer. The Marquette City Commission donated property on Wilkinson Avenue in north Marquette. The city had been trying without success to sell the lots, which will be put back on the property tax rolls when developed. Mike Clark, who chairs Habitat’s board of directors, said construction on two houses will begin this summer. Five are planned for the lot.

MARQUETTE — School superintendents of the Upper Peninsula will meet in Marquette Saturday, Feb. 4, to discuss problems brought about by the 15-mill tax limitation amendment, according to an announcement yesterday by W. M. Whitman, superintendent of schools in Marquette. The meeting has been called largely for the purpose of exchanging ideas in regard to the financial situation schools are facing as the result of the anticipated reductions in budgets under the present tax limitation on property. The conference is expected to bring about a clearer understanding of problems faced by school systems in the Upper Peninsula and out of it is expected to develop suggestions as to how the schools may carry on their work without undermining the progress already made in the advancement of education.
