MENOMINEE — The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board wants the Legislature to approve the purchase of 1,673 acres to expand a waterfowl area in south-east Gourley Township. The area is considered a “quality wildlife habitat” with upland area for deer, said Eric Antisdale, grand coordinator for the wildlife division of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The land would be an addition to the Escanaba River Forest. It would be jointly managed by the DNR’s Wildlife and forest management divisions.

MARQUETTE — Twenty high schools will compete in the Upper Peninsula Championship Debate Tournament at Northern Michigan College this Friday and Saturday. Large and small high schools will be represented in two divisions. The topic for debate is: “Resolved: That the United States should join in forming a Common Market among nations of the western hemisphere.” Debaters and coaches will meet at 3 P.M., Friday in the Audio-Visual Auditorium, with the first round of debates scheduled for 3:15 P.M. The second and third rounds on Friday will be at 4:45 and 7:30 P.M respectively. The four schools in each division making the best record on Friday will debate in the semi-final eliminations Saturday at 9 A.M. The final championship debates will be at 10:30. William Schindler of the Detroit Free Press will be the main speaker, and also will award Free Press watches to the members of the winning team in each division. The public is invited to attend any of the debates.
