MANISTIQUE — A move to offer Manistique residents a choice in refuse collection failed before the city council late last month. Currently, refuse collection service is provided to the city through an exclusive contract with Manistique Rentals, Inc. The contract will expire in May. Council member Michael Dougovito suggested that the groundwork be laid to provide for garbage collection prior to the contract expiration.

MARQUETTE — Two persons guessed the exact number of lights in the “Tower of Lights” contest conducted by WDMJ, The Mining Journal radio station. Determining the winners was in this year’s event was no easy task, according to station personnel. Thousands of entries had to be screened before the winners could be announced. Anyone could enter the contest, in which participants guessed the number of lights used in the tower display, made in the form of a Christmas tree, which was set up atop The Mining Journal building. Winners of the contest were Donald R. McInnis and Mrs. Robers E. LaCourse. They guessed the exact total, at 983 lights. In a drawing to determine which would get the first-place money, McInnis won. McInnis thus received a $50 award and Mrs. LaCourse the second-place prize, $25.

Starting at $3.23/week.
