MARQUETTE — New Year’s Eve is looking a lot like Christmas with a half-foot of new snow and more on the way. Marquette, Ishpeming, and Negaunee all received about five inches between 7 p.m. Wednesday and 1 a.m. this morning, and could get eight more today, according to the National Weather Service at the Marquette County Airport. Despite snow- and ice-covered roads, Sgt. Mark Edens at the Michigan State Police post in Negaunee said very few accidents have been reported. “It hasn’t been that bad, considering,” Edens said. “I think the weather is holding people back.” The heavy snowfall was the result of a low pressure system from Illinois that moved east across Lake Huron overnight, said Gregory Forrester, a National Weather Service meteorologist intern. Today’s snow, however, will be driven by north winds blowing across Lake Superior. “We have colder air moving in, the result of Canadian high pressure that’s going to move into our area for the weekend,” Forrester said.

NEGAUNEE — The American Legion entertained 200 children of Negaunee ex-service men at the Christmas party Thursday afternoon in the Legion clubhouse. About 100 of the children were present at the party and the others were “treated” at their homes. The party in the clubhouse was an enjoyable affair. Miss Dorothy Wetton and Mrs. Elmer Arscott entertained the children with games and Miss Sezerine E. Wellett, librarian, told interesting stories. John Peel gave a cowboy demonstration of rope handling and John Mattson and B. LeMay entertained with harmonica selections. The children entered into the spirit and helped the program committee with recitations and songs. The “treat” consisted of ice cream, cake, popcorn, fruit, and candy. Toys were also distributed.

Starting at $3.23/week.
