MARQUETTE — The fire department was called out at 12:20 yesterday afternoon to the Schoch & Hallam Co. store building, 214 S. Front St., but no damage resulted from the blaze. Fire Chief John W. Myers said there apparently was an oil leak in the furnace in the basement. The oil leaked under the burner and ignited, he said, but the blaze itself was confined to the furnace. Firemen used high pressure water from the 2_ gallon hand extinguisher to put out the fire. There was considerable smoke in the basement, Chief Myers added, and firemen had to use two smoke ejectors (large portable fans) to get the smoke out of the basement. Because the call was treated as a general alarm, the Nos. 3 (1,000-gallon) and 4 (750-gallon) pumpers and the service truck, with nine on-duty men, responded to the alarm, which was phoned to the telephone operator, who in turn notified the firemen. Thirteen off-duty firemen were summoned back to their posts. Firemen returned to the station at 12:50 p.m.
