ISHPEMING — The Ishpeming City Council gave Benson Forest Products permission Wednesday to drive logging trucks through the Al Quaal Recreation Area. Benson trucks will be hauling logs harvested from 80 acres near Deer Lake, north of the recreation area. Marty Wilk, Benson’s chief operating officer, assured the council that the company is sensitive to safety concerns raised by the small-scale operation. The hauling is expected to begin around Christmas. Wilk said one truck will haul six to eight loads per week. No hauling will be done during peak recreation hours on Wednesday and Thursday nights, or during the hours students at Birchview Elementary School are arriving, departing, or sledding during recess, Wilk said.

ISHPEMING — The police are being kept busy in an effort to discourage children from hitching on the rear of automobiles and Marshal Nestor Eckloff is hoping that the officers will be successful before some child is seriously or fatally injured. “We have numerous complaints from automobile drivers that children, especially boys of the grade school age, are hitching rides on automobiles and we are doing everything to discourage the practice,” Marshal Eckloff said. “Many parents have been advised that their children are pursuing this very dangerous practice and in some cases the children have been made to see the dangers. School teachers also have warned children against hitching rides, but there seem to be a number of ‘smart’ boys who do not heed this advice. Police, in the future, will bring any boys caught riding on the back of automobiles to the city jail and they will not be released until their parents come to the jail. We will make an effort to have the parents use ‘convincing’ arguments with the youngsters in an effort to check this dangerous past time. Motorists troubled by boys catching rides on their cars will do us a favor if they will learn the names of the children and report them to us so that we can get in touch with their parents or the youngsters themselves.”
