SAULT STE. MARIE — Great Lakes shipping has been running ahead of the 1991 pace despite a two-month slowdown, the Lake Carriers Association says. The group’s latest report says September tonnage fell 2.8 percent from the same month last year and 6 percent in October. But because of a brisk spring, 1992 remains better than 1991. Through October, shipping of the Great Lakes’ three major commodities-taconite, coal, and stone-stood at 103.3 million tons, up from 99.9 million tons during the same period last year.

MARQUETTE — Fisher Elementary School students were excused from school today because of electrical difficulties at the building. An overloaded transformer which operates the buildings heating system burned out early this morning, Acting City Manager Thomas Moore said. The light and power department received the call at 7:45 a.m., and the transformer was replaced and power was restored at 10:30 a.m. However, students were excused from classes for the whole day to allow time for the building to warm up again. Average building temperature dropped to the 40s during the power failure.

Starting at $3.23/week.
