ESCANABA — A gasoline leak at Rock may end up being very costly for the Delta County Road Commission. Residential water wells in Rock were contaminated several years ago by petroleum, and a buried fuel tank at the road commission’s garage has been targeted as a potential source. Road Commission Managing Director Any Trim told the Delta County Board Wednesday that the commission is facing serious financial liability concerns as a result. Trim asked whether the county board would consider a loan to help pay for the clean-up. He said the Department of Natural Resources is requiring installation of wells to monitor the area and may attempt to recover $1.7 million the state spent to install a water system in Rock. An engineer’s cost estimate for testing and monitoring the site is $225,000.
