MARQUETTE — The city of Marquette will receive a $400,000 grant through the state’s Rebuild Michigan initiative to finance engineering of a water filtration project. Marquette is one of 11 state communities sharing more than $2.6 million in federal grants for public works projects, Gov. John Engler announced earlier this week. In Marquette, the grant will help offset engineering costs for a water filtration plant with an estimated construction cost of $10 million. Federal and state law require municipalities using surface water to install filtration systems. Marquette has until 1998 to build a plant that will treat water from Lake Superior. City Manager Dale Iman said this has been an especially good year for grants. The city also received a $480,000 site reclamation award to clean up contaminated soil at the McClellan Avenue and Washington Street intersection. And it expects $350,000 from the Michigan Department of Transportation to extend McClellan Avenue. The $1.23 million in grants received so far compare to $135,000 last year. “We’ll continue to push for more grants,” Iman said. “If we don’t bring in grant money,” we don’t have to raise taxes.”
