ISHPEMING — For the third time in two months, smoke detectors are credited with saving the lives of west Marquette County residents. Ishpeming Township firefighters responded at 3:38 this morning to a mobile home fire at the Sunnyside Estates Mobile Home Park off North Lake Drive. The mobile home was occupied by a mother and her two children, according to Fire Chief Al Sundberg. The structure was heavily damaged and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Sundberg said the fire started in the area of the hot water heater. “The smoke detectors saved their lives because it alerted them there was a fire,” he said. Smoke detectors are credited with saving lives in recent fires in Negaunee and Ishpeming Township. Sundberg said the Pigs-N-Heat fire relief fund will be used to assist the victims. Fourteen firefighters and one truck responded to the blaze. There were no injuries.

MARQUETTE — Commencing this morning, WBEO, The Mining Journal radio station, will be on a temporary schedule of seven hours a day, the same basis on which the station operated before its three and a half months’ suspension of broadcast from June 18 to Oct. 1. This temporary arrangement will be in effect until the federal radio commission acts upon a request of The Mining Journal station for a longer broadcasting schedule than has been in effect during the last two months. The station has been operating on a four and one-half hour basis and it is planned to have the time extended to five and three-quarter hours. The station’s request for a new schedule is based on a large number of requests from listeners for longer broadcasts during the morning hours. If the new arrangement is approved, WBEO will be on the air from 9:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Following this there will be an intermission of three hours and 45 minutes and the day’s broadcasting will be concluded between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Signing off at 7 p.m. will mean that The Mining Journal station will avoid heterodyning with outside stations as much as in the past.
