CHAMPION — Recently 51 third and fourth graders from the Champion Elementary School planted tree seedlings as part of the “Kids Can Grow Forests” program, developed by Fred Rice, Mead Woodlands Greenhouse manger from Escanaba. Last March, the students planted seeds for the trees. Rice and area forester Bob Flasch guided the children through the mixing of the seeding soil, planting the seed in a paper cup, and later watching as trees emerged on the window sill of their classroom. The seedlings were transferred to a greenhouse until ready to plant. Third-graders who started the project will harvest and market the Christmas trees when they are seniors in high school. Assisting the project were Marvin Ruspakka, third grade teacher; Sister Maureen Freeman, pastor of Sacred Heart; Berle Lapin, church council member; Richard Stetson, fourth-grade teacher; Marjorie Klein, elementary school principal; Sister Paul Bernadette, Sacred Heart and Dennis Vissering.
