MARQUETTE — Shopping baskets in hand and kids in tow, Rita Petersen and Helen Barney, along with children, Kimberly and Jocelyn Barney, came to town for some power shopping. The two women from Chassell carefully scanned the shelves for bargains at Marquette’s Budget Dollar, where everything goes for less than a buck. The pair had plenty of company at the 2-week-old Westwood Mall store. According to manager Linda Johnson, the 30-40 people packed into the store on a recent weekday afternoon actually made for a slow day. The Marquette store is the fourth one opened by owner Bob Schuette of Wallace, Wis. since June. Schuette’s wife, Bobbi, general manager of the stores, took a break from setting up displays to explain how her husband gets the merchandise at a low price. “He goes to trade shows all over the country and buys the merchandise at good prices.” The other stores are located in Ironwood, Iron Mountain and Shawano, Wis.

MARQUETTE — Troop 1, Boy Scouts, assembled at 10 o’clock yesterday morning and motored to Sugar Loaf where, at the Barlett King monument, Armistice Day services were held. A flag pole was erected and the flag was run to the top of the pole by John LaFonde. The monument’s base had been banked with a green border of balsam and a wreath of glowing yellow chrysanthemums, E.R. Tauch’s gift to the troop for its memorial service. The Scout’s oath of allegiance was recited and the invocation was pronounced by the Rev. Sidney Smith. In a brief talk, Perry Hatch, Scoutmaster of Troop 1, paid tribute to Bartlett King, a Scoutmaster of Troop, who gave his life in the World War. Scout executive C.F. Spurr told of the history of Armistice Day and accented the ideals which it symbolizes. Taps sounded and brought to its conclusion one of the most impressive of the ceremonies held here to memorialize Armistice Day.
