NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee school board plans Monday to discuss expansion of foreign language programs to the middle school. Superintendent Don Mourand said the district is considering offering Russian and/or Spanish at the middle school during the second half of this school year. The high school presently offers four foreign language courses — Russian, German, Spanish and French. The district has applied for a state aid incentive that pays $5 per student to schools that expand their foreign language program to the next lowest grade level. Negaunee hopes to receive $8,450, Mourand said. The board meets at 7 p.m. in Lakeview Elementary School.

NEGAUNEE — Although they lost to the Knights of Columbus by eight holes, the Veterans of Foreign Wars retained their lead in the Negaunee Social Cribbage League this week with a 33-hole margin over the runner-up Moose team, which trounced the American Legion by 319 holes from the Elks. In the third match on the calendar, the Eagles won by 236 holes from the Elks. High score honors and complimentary theater tickets were won by Marcotte of the Moose with a 1,206 match. The only other total in excess of 1,200 was a 1,202 posted by Oliver Lahti and Elmer Williamson of the Moose. Les Conradson and Vital Galetto of the Elks were the victims of a “double skunk,” a cribbage rarity, as they tallied only 53 holes in one game. League play will be interrupted for one week because of deer hunting. The schedule will be resumed on Monday, Nov. 19, when the Elks visit the Veterans, the Eagles entertain the Legion, and the Moose host the Knights of Columbus.
