MARQUETTE — Record crowds packed the Palestra Saturday night and yesterday afternoon for the opening weekend of the municipal ice skating season. “Opening days always lure big crowds,” commented James C. E. Engle, city parks and recreation superintendent, “but the weekend attendance was perhaps the biggest we’ve ever had. If the turnouts continue in the same proportion this season, we’ll experience the best ice skating season we’ve ever had in Marquette.” Later in the fall, as soon as weather conditions permit, Engle said, the city will open and maintain six outdoor skating rinks. The Palestra ice skating season is traditionally opened on the weekend after Halloween.
