MARQUETTE -- The Northern Michigan University Police Department has been made aware of the possibility of impairing substances being added to alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages at student-attended gatherings.

It has issued these tips as part of a public safety alert:

≤ Do not accept a drink from someone else or leave drinks unattended.

≤ Consume alcohol responsibly and in moderation.

≤ Stay with a group of trusted friends.

≤ If going out alone, inform a friend of where you will be and when you will be returning.

≤ Keep your cell phone available and fully charged.

≤ If experiencing any health or safety related concerns, call 911 or go to the hospital immediately.

≤ Help combat crime while being an active bystander by intervening if safe to do so, or by calling 911 to report hazardous or suspicious situations.

Advisories/alerts are provided in an effort to make the NMU community aware of situations posing a potential threat to the safety and well-being of those who live, work, study and visit the campus.

By spreading awareness of situations occurring in the community, the NMU Police Department said it encourages individuals to become actively involved in crime prevention. Personal safety practices and knowledge are the best defense against crime.

This message is intended to promote safety on and off campus and comply, in part, with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1990.
