MARQUETTE — Faced with the threat of a lawsuit, Marquette County must find a way to get rid of thousands of cubic yards of contaminated soil. Norman Holmes, chairman of the county planning commission, warned the county board Tuesday that it must take immediate action. County Senior Planner Jim Kippola said that when a Marquette property owner was denied a request to transport soil out of the county for treatment, he told the planning commission legal action could be an option. There is an estimated 50,000 cubic yards of petroleum-contaminated soil in Marquette County, the result of leaky underground storage tanks.

His immediate goal is to arrange a program of English instruction for grades 7 through 12 to be put into operation when the high school moves into a new building next year. As head of the English department, Wester will supervise instruction of language arts for all grades, kindergarten through grade 12.
