MARQUETTE — The number of car-deer accidents in the Upper Peninsula increased dramatically in 1991 over the previous year, according to the Michigan Department of State. In 1991, 6,419 deer were hit by vehicles in the U.P., up about 29 percent from the previous year. Statewide, there were 48,233 such crashes. Seven motorists died in car-deer crashes in 1991, including one each in Marquette and Schoolcraft counties.

MARQUETTE — City firemen were called out at 8 yesterday morning to Schneider’s Boarding House, Lake Shore Boulevard, where an overheated wood range and an uncleaned chimney resulted in a chimney blaze. Firemen used the booster hose off the service truck and a 12-foot extension ladder in putting out the flames. They also used a pike pole to clean the chimney. The No. 3 (1,000-gallon) pumper also driven to the scene. Firemen returned to the station at 8:38 a.m.
