NEGAUNEE — Red ribbons will be distributed during the next week in Negaunee schools as part of a nationwide effort to keep kids off drugs and to honor a slain federal narcotics agent.

The Red Ribbon Campaign began after the 1985 murder of Drug Enforcement Administration agent Enrique Camarena by narcotics traffickers in Mexico. All Negaunee students and teachers will be given a ribbon during the awareness week which begins today. The local project is being sponsored by the Negaunee Elks Club and various activites are scheduled during the week at Negaunee Public schools. “The Red Ribbon symbolizes a commitment to a drug-free, healthy lifestyle, and urges no use of illegal drugs or illegal use of legal drugs,” said Doug DuShane, chairman of the Negaunee Elks drug awareness committee. DuShane said the Elks Club is a member of Michigan Communities for a Drug-Free Youth, which helps with the ribbon project and other drug awareness programs.
